What does it take to make Rural ITS work? It takes technical excellence across a variety of skill areas. It takes creativity. It also helps to learn from the experiences of others. The challenges in making Rural ITS work are significant. Therefore, it’s important for ITS technology practitioners to be able to meet in order to share what they’ve learned and help advance the state-of-the-practice. Starting in 2006, the Western States Rural Transportation Technology Implementers Forum has provided ITS implementers and engineers from the western states region with valuable opportunities for detailed dialogue about some innovative engineering and communications projects designed to support the rural transportation system. The Forum is valuable, not only for the detailed and knowledgeable presentations and demonstrations, but also for the times outside of sessions where participants can network with their peers from other districts and states. The Western States Forum is unique. Speakers are given an extended amount of time to really delve into the nuts and bolts of how a project works, whether it relates to equations, source code, component-level discussion, or lessons learned. Questions and discussion are encouraged throughout and not just at the end of a presentation or demonstration. High quality technical content, discussion, transparency and trust are the main goals of the Forum. |

UPDATE: Friday, December 16th, 2011
The 2012 Western States Rural Transportation Technology Implementers Forum is slated for June 12th, 13th, and 14th, in Yreka, California.
The Call for Abstracts has been issued and we need your help! We are seeking both presentations and live demonstrations about actual rural ITS projects and applications. We always encourage participation from speakers who can discuss and/or demonstrate a project implemented or improved because of participation in a past Forum.
Forum presentations and demonstrations are very technical and get down to the “nuts and bolts” of how rural ITS projects work, or don’t work. They can cover a variety of topic areas related to ITS design and engineering in rural areas such as:
- Design, engineering and installation of rural ITS field applications, such as warning and safety systems
- Design, installation, calibration and evaluation of roadside traffic detection equipment (loop or non-intrusive)
- Applications of microwave, radio, cellular, 802.11 WiFi and/or WiMax communications
- Custom IT application development
- Innovative applications of commercial IT applications (e.g., Google Earth™)
- Lessons learned with application and development of standards and specifications (e.g., NTCIP , DOT specifications)
This is the 7th Western States Forum and many different topics have been addressed over the years. Here is a short list of presentations from previous Forums to give you an idea of the content discussed at the Forum in the past:
- A Tale of Two RWISs (RWIS Trials and Tribulations)
- Caltrans WeatherShare System: A Look at Design, Development, and Usability
- Field Experiments with Bluetooth Sensors
- Ground System Design and its Role in ITS
- Microwave Communications for Rural ITS Applications
- Photovoltaic Power Systems for Rural ITS
- Run-Away Truck Escape Ramp: A Trucker’s Safety Net
- Washington DOT Field Tests of Wireless and Microwave Vehicle Detection Systems
- Weather Warning Systems in Oregon and Region 5 Interstate Access Gates
To review the full list of presentations from previous Forums, check out the Forum website at http://www.westernstatesforum.org/PastForums/. You can also review many of the presentations themselves to get a feel for the depth and breadth of technical content expected for the Western States Forum.
If you are involved with a rural ITS project you think would be of interest to other technology practitioners, we would encourage you to consider submitting an abstract for presentation and/or demonstration at the 2012 Forum. For more information about the Forum and instructions on how to submit an abstract, please go to the Forum website and the Call for Abstracts page at http://www.westernstatesforum.org/CurrentForum/Abstracts/.
The deadline for abstract submission is Friday, January 20, 2012.
