Integration of Aviation AWOS with RWIS Update - March 1st, 2011

AWOS/RWIS HOME | ARCHIVED UPDATES

UPDATE: Tuesday, March 1st, 2011

The 90th Annual Meeting of the Transportation Research Board (TRB) was held January 23-27, 2011, in Washington, D.C. Covering all modes of transportation, the TRB Annual Meeting program had more than 4,000 presentations in close to 650 sessions and workshops. The presentations addressed topics of interest to a wide variety of attendees, from policy makers and administrators to practitioners and researchers to representatives of government, industry and academic institutions. The spotlight theme for 2011 was Transportation, Livability, and Economic Development in a Changing World.

A poster entitled Integration of Aviation Weather Information Systems with Roadside Weather Information Systems was presented by Doug Galarus in the Impacts of Weather on Surface Transportation poster session. Wenbin Wei and Courtney Moreland from the Department of Aviation and Technology at San Jose State University and Shaowei Wang, formerly with WTI, were co-authors of the poster presentation.

The Problem: Underserved, rural airfields and heliports may not have access to comprehensive and accurate local meteorological data.

A Solution: A web application that aggregates available weather information from aviation weather systems like AWOS and ASOS, RWIS, and other weather data sources, into a user-friendly, map-based interface.
