UPDATE: Tuesday, August 20th, 2013

Members of the Western States Rural Transportation Consortium (WSRTC) are headed to St. Cloud, Minnesota, August 25-28, 2013, to participate in the 2013 National Rural ITS Conference (NRITS) – Footpaths 2 Intelligent Highways.

NRITS is an annual conference focused on rural applications of intelligent transportation systems. Attendees come from a wide variety of ITS disciplines, including public and private transportation, transit, tourism, law enforcement, and medical service professions – all engaged in the operations, maintenance, and use of our transportation system. Sessions “will bring together both traditional and non-traditional ITS users to address such issues as rural safety, multi-agency coordination, and workforce development, as well as EMS and transit issues.”

WSRTC Steering Committee members will participate in NRITS in various capacities. Ian Turnbull from Caltrans will be a panelist in Session B3: Maintenance and Operations Management: Are we thinking strategically? David Veneziano from WTI will present results from a WSRTC incubator project in a presentation entitled, Synthesis of Western US Automated Safety Warning Systems, in Session G2: Automated Warning Systems. And Doug Galarus from WTI will present Field Element Data Quality Control from the Perspective of Data Redistribution in Session B1: ATIS Information: Understanding and Maximizing Usage. This work in this presentation overlaps with numerous WSRTC Spin-off Projects including WeatherShare and the One Stop Shop (OSS).

The WSRTC will also hold its next steering committee meeting immediately after NRITS on Wednesday, August 28th, 2013. Progress on the various incubator projects will be reviewed and discussed along with updates on other projects of interest. A summary of the 2013 Western States Forum will be presented as will any updates regarding the WSRTC Pooled Fund. The meeting will conclude with a roundtable discussion of recent and planned ITS activities being conducted in the WSRTC region.
